Earth will have a second 'tiny moon' for two months
It won't be there forever, but Earth will have a second moon when a small asteroid begins to orbit the planet later this month, space researchers have announced.
Scientists Just Discovered That Earth Is Getting A Second Moon—And It's About To Shake Up Your Sign
Earth is getting a temporary second "mini moon," a.k.a. the 2024 PT5 asteroid. Here's how you can see it and if it will affect your astrological star sign.
Earth will have a 'mini-moon' for nearly 2 months, researchers say. Here's what that means.
For nearly two months this year, Earth’s moon will have company — a second moon. Technically, it isn’t a second moon, but rather an asteroid from the Arjuna asteroid belt — named 2024 PT5 — that will be caught in the Earth’s gravitational pull,
What you need to know about Earth’s new, temporary mini-moon
Here’s what to know about our new, temporary celestial neighbor. Earth has a large gravitational pull. So it’s not uncommon for objects flying through space to be attracted to it or get caught up in an orbit — at which point they earn status as miniature moons. The same happens with objects purposefully placed in space, such as satellites.
Earth to get a new ‘mini-moon’ for 2 months
An asteroid, pulled into Earth’s orbit, is sometimes known as a ‘mini-moon.’ You’ll need a telescope to view it.
Earth Is Getting a ‘Second Moon’ for the Next 2 Months. Here’s What It Means for Your Sign
Yep, Earth will temporarily get a second moon. It’s called 2024 PT5 and it’s been called a “mini moon” by astronomers. 2024 PT5 is expected to join Earth’s orbit for two months, before breaking free sometime in November, according to research published earlier this month.
Earth will get another moon this month — but not for long!
Earth will grab itself another moon this month, but only briefly. The "mini-moon" in the form of asteroid 2024 PT5 will stick around for just two months.
A second 'mini' moon is coming into Earth's orbit, but not for long
Asteroid PT5 was discovered on August 7 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System and was observed by a team in South Africa. According to the article, PT5 will reach its closest approach to Earth again on January 9, 2025 before it leaves "the neighborhood of Earth shortly afterwards," and will return again in 2055.
